Check out Consumer Reports top picks for 2011

MSN.com breaks down the best cars in 10 categories, “proving goodness doesn’t require paying top dollar.”

Six new models made our Top Picks list this year, representing a diverse selection from Japan, South Korea, and the U.S. No automaker dominates; the 10 picks come from six manufacturers and eight brands, which reflect the increasing competitiveness within today’s auto market. Toyota is the only brand with more than one model. To see the best & worst 2011 cars and best new-car car values, go to Consumer Reports’ annual auto issue hub.

Our Top Picks are the best all-around models in their categories. Chosen from the more than 270 vehicles we’ve recently tested, these vehicles scored well in our testing, have average or better predicted reliability, performed well in government or insurance-industry safety tests, if evaluated, and offer stability control — a proven, lifesaving feature.

Attending the US GT Academy Finals

Jeff Morgan of Bullz-Eye.com recently attended the US GT Academy finals and shared his experience of the event!

Video game tournaments are notoriously boring affairs. As fun and addictive as I find many games, watching someone else play those same games is the entertainment equivalent to watching my grandparents play bridge. The mind-numbing effect of spectating a game tournament is only multiplied when the viewer doesn’t know the game, as was my situation at the US GT Academy finals this week. As I mentioned to the rest of the media at the event on Wednesday afternoon, I haven’t picked up a Gran Turismo title since GT2 and I wasn’t any good at that game, anyway.

But this event wasn’t for me (shocking, I know). It was for the 32 competitors – mostly young guys with a couple of standouts – who had bested some 53,000 other drivers in an online Gran Turismo 5 tournament and now stood a chance at winning a trip to Silverstone, entering the next phase of the GT Academy competition, the outcome of which could dramatically change their lives. In part, that’s what sets GT Academy apart from other video game tournaments. In most cases, the winners walk away with a new gaming rig or an oversized check, but it’s rarely the sort of thing that dreams are made of. In the case of GT Academy, virtual racing enthusiasts are given the chance to get behind the wheel of a real life race car and, if they can beat the rest of the contestants in a physical competition, earn a spot on Nissan’s racing team.

2012 Ferrari FF in all it’s glory

Sit back, relax and enjoy these videos of the gorgeous 2012 Ferrari FF. Keep in mind that there is a V12 with 650 horses under the hood! Can it get any better?

Magrath promised there would be many more posts on the 2012 Ferrari FF, so here’s another, as the four-wheel-drive, four-seat shooting brake got an early unveil last night in Maranello, Italy, in front of 700 Ferrari owners and dignitaries. We’ll see it again next week at 2011 Geneva Auto Show, where the sheet will be pulled off in front of a couple hundred sweaty journalists in ill-fitting suits.

No additional specs were released, so we’ll have to take it on faith that the car’s front-mounted 6.2-liter V12 still makes around 650 horsepower and 504 pound-feet of torque — and that Ferrari’s seven-speed, dual-clutch gearbox will be up to the task of managing such a monumental torque load.

After the jump we offer a few more photos from the event, along with the real treat — a new 3-minute video of the FF looking and sounding rather awesome as it’s hustled along tarmac, and through snow, sand, Ferrariworld…
