Will the new 2011 Ford Explorer be able to carry the torch?

There are a lot of questions about the upcoming all new car based Explorer mostly because it has been kept a top secret for so long now. Will the Explorer and Flex be able to co-exist? Chief engineer Jim Holland is confident the new product will silence critics when it hits showrooms later this year. The anticipation grows and if the Explorer turns out to be a home run what does that do to Flex sales which are mediocre at best?

From Detroit Free Press:

Jim Holland, chief engineer for the redesigned Ford Explorer, which is expected to come to dealerships late this year, has faced naysayers before.

Holland, 49, was chief engineer of the Range Rover when a redesign of that SUV was launched in 2002.

“We got a lot of the same questions that I am getting today,” Holland said.

Mainly, those questions center on whether the new Explorer can maintain its ruggedness and towing capacity as it shifts from a body-on-frame truck to a car-based crossover. Ford still plans to market the Explorer as an SUV.

Next Generation Nissan Z To Go Hybrid

We’re test driving the 370Z 40th Anniversary Edition as I write (look for the review soon) so we were intrigued to see that a possible Hybrid 370Z is on the way from Nissan. This would make a very attractive sports car even better if performance and power remain intact. The industry is moving at a very fast pace and that makes it an exciting time to see all of the new developments that will make great cars even more desirable going forward.

Nissan’s Datsun 240Z broke ground in the early 1970’s by offering bulletproof reliability and the performance of a Jaguar E-Type for a third of the cost. The next generation Z-car could be similarly important by mating a hybrid drivetrain into a serious performance car, if reports coming out of Japan are accurate.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi to open in October

Will we be racing sports car themed roller coasters soon? Looks like Ferrari is the first out of the gate with the opening of their very own amusement park in Dubai! The Ferrari roller coaster is being clocked at 149mph which makes it slower than your normal Ferrari but faster than any other roller coaster at this point in time.

Ferrari is already a merchandising juggernaut, having opened a number of stand-alone boutiques as well as their vaunted showrooms, where mere mortals are unable to buy a new car without jumping through hoops. The next step in this global empire was a theme park, and where else to do it but in the United Arab Emirates, international playground for the fabulously wealthy. Situated on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi (which, unlike its neighbour Dubai, is financially solvent), the theme park is conveniently perched across from the Yas Marina F1 circuit, and features over 20 Ferrari themed attractions, including the worlds fastest roller coaster, capable of reaching speeds of up to 149 mph. Six Flags this ain’t.

Jeep cuts price of redesigned Grand Cherokee

Marchionne comes out swinging cutting the price of the redesigned 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The new starting point will be
$32,995 for the base four-wheel-drive model (the Laredo 4×4) which is $465 less than the 2010 model. Prices include shipping.

This will make for some good press for the new SUV and if the looks and quality are there this would be a great start under the new leadership from Fiat.

DETROIT — Jeep is pricing the base four-wheel-drive model of the 2011 Grand Cherokee, the Laredo 4×4, at $32,995, $465 less than the equivalent 2010 model. Prices include shipping.

The Chrysler Group began making Grand Cherokees at its Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit this week. The vehicles will begin arriving in showrooms next month.

The Grand Cherokee comes in three models: Laredo, Limited and Overland. The Limited 4×4 starts at $39,995, and the top-of the line Overland starts at $42,995.

2010 Mazda MX-5 Miata Track Test

You gotta love the iconic Mazda Miata! It rings of weekend drives with the top down and sunny days. That’s fine and dandy but how did this car perform when you want to really have some fun? Our friends at InsideLine took this bad boy for a few trips around the track and seemed to respect this roadster for it’s abilities. Hey, you have to remember this is a sub 25k car here!

Inside Line tests hundreds of vehicles a year, but not every vehicle gets a full write-up. The numbers still tell a story, though, so we present “IL Track Tested.” It’s a quick rundown of all the data we collected at the track, along with comments direct from the test drivers. Enjoy.

Mazda’s iconic roadster celebrates its 20th birthday in 2010, as the first MX-5 Miatas that rolled off the line in Hiroshima, Japan, were 1990 models. This seriously entertaining little car has proven to be a real survivor, particularly in the always fickle U.S. market. Other automakers have tried and failed to break into the affordable roadster niche (which now hovers around the $25,000 mark), and only the Mazda Miata keeps on keeping on.
