Chrysler to invest $179 million in its Dundee engine

Fiat/Chrysler is beginning to invest in the U.S. with this great news for Michigan! I still say if they (Fiat/Chrysler) can survive the next 12 – 18 months great things can happen under Marchionne.

From the Detroit News:

Auburn Hills — Chrysler Group LLC CEO Sergio Marchionne on Thursday morning confirmed plans to invest $179 million in its Dundee engine plant to build a fuel-efficient, four-cylinder Fiat SpA engine for use in the subcompact Fiat 500 and other cars.

The investment will create 155 Chrysler jobs on a single shift and another 573 spinoff jobs. It is too soon to begin hiring, executives said.

The automaker’s Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance LLC plant in Dundee currently employs 66 salaried and 184 hourly workers on two shifts.

End of the road for Saab?

Looks like the end of the road for Saab unless a profitable car company wants to take a chance. The bigger question here is, will any of GM’s brand that were announced to be sold during the bankruptcy filing actually ever be sold?

From Autoblog.com:

It’s now or never. By the end of December General Motors will either divest itself of Saab by selling the Swedish automaker or by permanently closing its doors. And there is but one company bidding for the Swedish automaker — Spyker — which has yet to turn a profit. GM Chairman and interim CEO Ed Whitacre told a group of reporters at the company’s Detroit headquarters that Spyker is the only automaker left bidding for the perennially struggling automaker. Whitacre reportedly told attendees that striking a deal was “possible,” but he then reiterated that Saab would close if the deal isn’t struck by the end of the year.

Next Generation MX-5 Miata to get 70-MPG?

The next generation Mazda Miata MX-5 could have the best of both worlds. Great looks and handling for this classic convertible and up to 70mpg! Now we’re talking…

From AutoGuide.com:

Mazda is looking to return to its roots when the next generation MX-5 Miata debuts. According to a report by InsideLine, the car will take inspiration from the MX-5 Superlight Concept and weigh just 2,200 lbs. Mazda has already announced that starting in 2011 it aims to cut the curb weight on all of its new models by at least 220 lbs.

Even more impressive is that it is expected to use the company’s new SKY-G engine, which Mazda debuted recently at the Tokyo Auto Show. Displacing just 1.3-liters, this 4-cylinder isn’t a hybrid or a diesel, but reportedly makes as much as 150-hp and can get anywhere from 50-mpg to 70-mpg!
