Hyundai steps up with new 2010 Sante Fe

Hyundai really steps it up with the new 2010 Sante Fe that will reportedly bring in 20/28 mpg, for front drive automatic models with the four-banger.

From AutoGuide.com:

Hyundai continues to deliver significantly improved vehicles, the latest being the 2010 Santa Fe mid-sized crossover, which is set to launch at the Detroit Auto Show. Mid-cycle refreshes rarely get the sort of overhaul that the 2010 Santa Fe has received, with minor interior and exterior updates being joined by two new engines, both of which are more fuel efficient than the engines they replace.

For 2010 the entry level 2.7-liter 4-cylinder has been replaced with Hyundai’s new Theta II 2.4-liter, which delivers 175-hp and 169 ft-lbs of torque – the same as in the new 2011 Tucson. This is less power than the old V6, but a new six-speed automatic transmission and the lighter weight of the 4-cylinder should put the crossover’s acceleration at about the same range. Fuel economy is up significantly (aided by the new six-speed transmission) from 18/24 mpg (city/highway) to 20/28 mpg, for front drive automatic models.

A four-cylinder Explorer?

On the eve of the auto show it appears some interesting storylines are playing out. How about a four-cylinder Explorer? Never would have believed that just a few short years ago but it looks like it will be a reality and it could be a great move.

From Autoblog.com:

Last summer, during a preview of what was coming from Ford in 2010, the company officially announced that a 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder Ecoboost engine would debut this year. Unfortunately, that’s about all we were told at that time. Like the 3.5-liter V6 Ecoboost, the four will be direct injected and turbocharged. We expect it will be rated somewhere in the 230-250 horsepower range, similar to a 3.0-liter naturally aspirated V6.

New Volt battery pack comes off line

Back to the Volt here. That is one out of this world looking battery pack for those of us seeing it for the first time. I have now seen the future and it is shiny!

From the Detroit News:

Brownstown Township — General Motors Co. assembled the first lithium-ion battery pack for its Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric car today.

The event drew U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, Gov. Jennifer Granholm and GM Chairman and CEO Ed Whitacre and a host of federal, state and local politicians who heralded the battery’s production as a symbolic step toward remaking Michigan’s economy and the nation’s manufacturing sector.

Chu’s presence underscores the importance that the Volt and other alternatively powered vehicles could have on cutting consumer reliance on foreign oil.

Head to head: 2010 Caddillac CTS-V vs. 2010 Mercedes Benz E63 AMG

This is a great head to head fight between two of the baddest cars on the road. 2010 Cadillac CTS-V vs. 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Nice work by MotorTrend on this one!

First into the cage: the BMW M5 (MT, July 2009). Result: Cadillac CTS-V emerges victorious, leaving the aging Munich Mauler pummeled and bloodied. Next arrives the newly supercharged Jaguar XFR (MT, October 2009), all swagger and panache and Savile Row suavity. Outcome: CTS-V rips the English aspirant’s neatly pressed ascot to shreds. It’s at this point Cadillac’s engineering team smirks a little.

Now comes Round Three — and the Caddy’s biggest threat yet: the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, a thundering, leather-wrapped cruise missile we’ve already dubbed the best AMG sedan to date. Pull up a seat. This one could get ugly.
