Nissan showcases Leaf electric car

Word on the street is that the Nissan Leaf is the real deal and coming to showrooms near you in 2012. One-hundred miles per charge is what we hear and that is music to our ears and wallet.

From AutoGuide.com:

With no official presence at the Detroit Auto Show, Nissan couldn’t resist showcasing its new Leaf electric car. On display alongside several other electric models in an area of the show dubbed Electric Avenue, Nissan claims that the Leaf is no concept, but an actual production model. It certainly looks the part, with a production quality exterior and interior, high-tech features and plenty of functionality.

The Leaf is powered by lithium-ion battery packs and is rated at 80kW/280Nm, (107-hp and 207 ft-lbs of torque), which should make this sub-compact a sporty little car.

The Maserati GranTurismo is a head-turner

This Maserati GranTurismo convertible is what gets the cameras flashing at these shows. We can see why as this is one hot car my friends!

From AutoGuide.com:

Originally unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show as the GranCabrio, Maserati has decided to give its convertible GranTurismo model a more self-explanatory name for North America: the GranTurismo Convertible.

This new drop-top expands the Maserati lineup to three models, including the Quattroporte sedan and the GranTurismo coupe.

The GranTurismo Convertible is powered by the company’s top-level 4.7-liter V8, making 433-hp. This seems to indicate that unlike Maserati’s other models, the 405-hp 4.2-liter V8 will not be offered. What this also may indicate is that a possible GranCabrio S model could make even more power. After all, with the added weight of the necessary chassis stiffening required in a drop-top, the 433-hp will deliver performance on par with the base-engine coupe.

Chinese auto market passes US market

The Chinese auto market passed the US market for the #1 spot in 2009 and now GM might be selling more cars in China than the US real soon. It’s called a global economy and GM appears to understand that!

From CNNMoney.com:

DETROIT (CNNMoney.com) — Chinese consumers bought more automobiles last year than Americans did for the first time. A top executive at General Motors thinks that it won’t be long before it too will sell more cars in China than in its home market.

In fact, Tim Lee, GM’s Shanghai-based president of international operations, said at the auto industry’s key trade show Tuesday that this day could come sooner rather than later.

“We did very very well,” Lee said about the company’s sales in China in 2009. “We don’t intend to stop with what we’ve done. We intend to grow.”

From the Detroit News:

nullCadillac has been tamed — in a green sort of way.

Instead, General Motors Co.’s luxury division today displayed its idea of what a hybrid should be with the introduction of the XTS Platinum plug-in hybrid concept.

Packed full of conveniences, the sedan is expected to hit the market in 2012 as a single replacement for both the STS and DTS.

GMC grows brand with Granite

The Granite is exactly the direction I feel GMC needs to go when addressing growing the GMC brand. Bring in younger and value conscious buyers with new vehicles like the Granite and you may keep them around for awhile. First glance this vehicle reminds of the Bronco concept Ford displayed a few years back. Hopefully GMC will build this one soon!

From the Detroit News:

For years, GMC was a purveyor of big work-like trucks and plush SUVs. But where do you fit in a shifting marketplace demanding smaller, more practical, fuel-efficient transportation choices?

If you’re General Motors Co.’s venerable all-truck brand, you rethink and shrink the lineup.

GM today will take the wraps off the Granite — a compact urban utility concept that is the smallest GMC ever and nearly 2 feet shorter than the new Terrain compact crossover.
