Ferrari raises the ante

According to Car and Driver Ferrari has raised the ante for street car performance again! Ferrari has called the 2011 599GTO “the most extreme sports car” it has ever produced and Car and Driver is buying it after sometime behind the wheel. There are 671 horses under the hood and a sifting experience that is rivaled by no other street car.

It’s obvious that the looks are classic Ferrari and the company didn’t overlook much detail in making this 300k machine maybe the fastest on the road.

So you still think the hottest street-legal Ferrari of them all is the Enzo? Listen up; we have an update. There’s a new champ in Maranello—it’s not as outrageous as the Enzo, but more powerful, more sophisticated, more agile, and even faster. Ferrari calls it “the most extreme sports car” it has ever produced. At a company where fabulous is the starting point for pretty much every new project, that’s saying something.

Ferrari’s challenge (besides, you know, actually engineering the car) was in choosing a name for the beast, which is based on the 599GTB Fiorano. There isn’t much to set the new car apart visually from the GTB, just additional aero elements at the front, aggressive rear air diffusers, and other various airflow management touches that add up to double the high-speed downforce of the “regular” 599.

Nissan expanding in China

Nissan is putting their foot on the gas pedal in China with an expansion that will increase production to over 900,000 units per year by 2012. China has kept the world auto market out of the cellar and with all of the big investments coming from global players like Nissan, China’s growth in this segment of the economy is poised to more than out pace the west.

The new offering from Nissan will be a mid sized sedan named the Kizashi.

Did we say that Japanese brands have to do something to stop the erosion of market share in China? Nissan took the advice and said today that they started construction of their second factory in China’s southern Guangdong Province. According to The Nikkei [sub], the factory will open in 2012 with an annual capacity of 240,000 vehicles.

The plant is part of Dongfeng Nissan, a joint venture between Nissan and Dongfeng Motor Co. Together with their first plant, Nissan will have capacity for 600,000 units in China. By end of 2012, Nissan plans to increase their total annual capacity to 900,000 units, up 70 percent from the 2009 level.

Is the Jaguar XJ the hottest cat on the road?

How good is the 2011 Jaguar XJ? The Wall Street Journal checked out the new Jag and saying that they liked it is an understatement. They were first enamored by the beauty of this elegant machine but that is where the admiration was just scratching the surface. Once inside and behind the wheel the driver was clearly blown away with the power and smoothness that combined for a refined and invigorating experience. The description of their time in this sedan and passion for this piece of art on 4 wheels is clearly something car companies can only dream about in a review but I guess that’s what Jaguars are supposed to do to us. Jags are sexy, smooth and strong (things that some argue have been missing lately) and the 2011 XJ is really what the company needed to bring it up to the podium with the superstars in the luxury sedan segment.

From the 1,200-watt Bowers & Wilkins audio system to all of the high tech amenities wrapped in an incredible package the daring design by Jaguar has apparently hit the mark with the Journal.

I clearly remember the moment nearly one year ago when I first laid eyes on Jaguar’s new XJ sedan, and felt as though I’d been impaled on some gorgeous aluminum tusk. What a fantastic looking automobile. On any aesthetic scale you’d care to calibrate—modernity, chic, formal grace, raw carnality—this thing simply obliterates the competition, just grinds their bones. Fee-fi-fo-fum, I smell the blood of Bavarians.

From that moment until this week, when I finally slid behind the wheel of the company’s flagship sedan, I sort of held my breath. Recent Jaguars—the XK coupe and XF sedan—have been very decent cars but always felt as if they missed greatness by a few millimeters. The 2011 XJ couldn’t possibly, as a machine, live up to all this sculptured sin.

Buick’s average buyer getting younger

Buick has a long way to go before they will bring in the 30 something crowd. Buick is happy that their average buyer has dropped to 61 yrs of age and that is questionable math. They will never get the Pontiac buyers in the door! They rushed to kill Pontiac which was well positioned to capture the 20 and 30 something generation but instead invested heavily in a brand most car buyers won’t even shop in the U.S.??? Another gift to Ford, Nissan, Mazda and Dodge from the General.

Now, 48 is still technically in the fat part of the US population pyramid, and far be it from me to question the youthfulness of folks who reach this age… but the two major premises in the LAT’s headline simply aren’t that true. For one thing, JD Power weighs in on the Buick-buyer-age controversy, telling the LAT that the average three years ago was 64, and that it has since fallen to 61. That contrasts with IIHS’ recent average Buick-buyer age of 65, up from a claimed average of 63 a year ago. Moreover, as the graph after the jump proves, Buick’s sales “surge” is barely perceptible in any context wider than the first quarter of this year.
