The Lack of Haggling about Car Prices

There used to be a time when buying a new car meant a lot of negotiating on the price. There was a constant haggle over everything from the sticker price to the add-ons. The haggling has always been a frustrating part of car prices, but that appears to be changing.

The truth is, the car industry is changing, focusing their attention on getting people into cars, rather than driving them away with pushy salesmen. What companies are doing is taking some of the issues out of negotiating.

They have started this process simply by getting more information out to you, the consumer, about what the price of the car should be. With so many resources available online that will tell you what the manufacturers suggested retail price is and even allowing you, in certain circumstances, to find out what the dealership markup is, car sellers are playing by the book and giving honest prices. This is giving the customer a level playing field with more buying power, and is helping car retailers gain the trust of consumers.

Another thing that is being changed is the add-ons. For years automobile add-ons were a negotiating tactic of the seller; they would offer to throw in packages for free in order to close a deal. But, but those days are no longer. In today’s market virtually every car maker is including traditionally add-on features as part of the standard packaging. Things like GPS, an MP3 player hookup, and certain safety features are all standard, leaving less room for the seller to up sell and a lot less power in the negotiation.

What the car companies are hoping for is a spike in the sales of their product. Even the used car market has been trying to take the haggle out of car buying in efforts to boost the industry back where it belongs.

Lincoln MKT next-gen Town Car for Ford

Mulally Ford is not wasting time preparing for the end of the line for the venerable Lincoln Town Car. Ford is making their best pitch to NYC that the new Lincoln MKT has the chops to replace the fabled Town Car for chauffeured drives around town and to and from the airport. The MKT will have the capability to be stretched for limo usage and include all wheel drive which should make this the future ride for chauffeured passengers. The Lincoln MKT is a luxurously appointed vehicle that can fill a big void for Ford and also keep many workers building product that should turn a tidy profit as well.

Great planning by Ford/Lincoln as I have the feeling we’ll be seeing quite a few “stretched” Lincoln MKT Town Rides around the city!

From CNN.com:

FORTUNE — If you’re wondering what might replace all those aging black Lincoln Town Cars used as New York City limousines when they finally reach a state beyond repair — wonder no more. Ford Motor Co (F, Fortune 500). is offering a special version of its Lincoln MKT crossover, announed just ahead of the Paris Auto Show’s public opening on October 2nd.

Black MKTs (and make no mistake — livery drivers will insist on black) are already showing up in Gotham, being put through their paces by chauffeurs trying to figure out whether their clients judge them sufficiently prestigious and sufficiently sturdy to withstand the wear and tear of livery operation in the big city.

Ferrari 599 SA Aperta

If you like Ferraris you’re going to love the Ferrari 599 SA Aperta!

From Inside Line:

As if owning a convertible Ferrari wasn’t exclusive enough, here is the Ferrari 599 SA Aperta. Built to celebrate Pininfarina’s 80th anniversary, this convertible 599 is the most exclusive road going Ferrari ever. Ferrari is building — and has already sold — 80 examples of this front-engined, V12- powered roadster. The SA stands for Sergio and Andrea Pininfarina.

Despite Ferrari’s bent towards the high-tech, this doesn’t have some swinging, flip-top roof a-la the Superamerica. Instead, there’s just a cloth soft top to be used in rare, emergency weather situations.

Aston Martin One-77 Gets 750 Horses

How fast can fast go? How about with 750 horespower? The Aston Martin One-77 Gets 750 Horses and that’s not a misprint my friends. Aston will produce 77 models at a price of 1.2 million pounds. That comes to 1600 pounds per horse…….

From MotorCrave.com:

Aston Martin announced official output figures for its limited-edition One-77, and the car will get even more horsepower than originally thought. By Aston’s reckoning the One-77’s 750 horses will make it the most powerful naturally aspirated supercar in the world. In terms of torque, the One-77’s 7.3-liter V12 engine provides 553 lb-ft.

It may be the most powerful naturally aspirated car, but Aston’s clearly contrived 220.007 mph time leaves the car about 20 mph short of the McLaren F1 for all-time fastest.

Aston is confident that it will sell all 77 models of the supercar, which carries a retail price over 1.2 million pounds.
