Golf GTI Edition 35 Reviewed

British car magazine EVO just finished reviewing the the VW Golf GTI Edition 35. The VW Golf GTI Edition 35 is a European only model that celebrates the 35th anniversary of the GTI’s introduction. The Edition 35 is subtly tweaked inside and out from the stock GTI with more power, some new body parts, and some traditional GTI interior cues (such as a golfball shift knob).

EVO had this to say about how these tweaks affect overall performance:

Technical highlights?
The in-line, turbocharged four cylinder is actually a detuned version of the Golf R’s engine rather than a tweaked version of the standard GTI’s motor. It puts out 232bhp (25bhp more than the standard car), which makes it the fastest production GTI ever. Happy Birthday indeed.

What’s it like to drive?
The most noticeable thing about the new engine is how it really likes to be revved – unusual for a turbocharged unit. It is, as you’d expect, also slightly quicker. In these days of RS500 Foci, the 35 doesn’t feel like a fireball, but where the standard car felt just a little lacklustre for a modern hot hatch, the 35 feels more on the current pace.

The 35 will be offered with either a manual or DSG twin-clutch gearbox and in both three- and five-door variants. The gearbox choice is really down to personal preference (I’d have the manual, but the DSG works fantastically and I can see the appeal), however things are a little more clear-cut when it comes to body styles. Get the three-door if you can because it feels noticeably stiffer and slightly sharper to drive.

There’s a lovely polish to the manners of the GTI with steering, pedal weight and ride all smooth and precise. Occasionally you feel it would benefit from a few more teeth in the way it handles but it’s still a great thing to dissect a good piece of road with.

As of right now, VW has no plans to introduce the Edition 35 here. Pity

Chrysler leads the pack in Detroit for June growth

From the Detroit News:

The three Detroit-based automakers all reported double-digit U.S. sales increases in June, led by Chrysler Group LLC’s 30 percent increase from a year ago with 120,394 vehicles sold and the best June for the automaker since 2007.

That is followed by a 13.6 percent increase reported by Ford Motor Co. with 194,114 vehicles sold.

The third domestic automaker, General Motors Co., reported a 10.2 percent increase on sales of 215, 358 vehicles compared with June 2010.

Among the top Japanese automakers, who continue to struggle with earthquake-related shortages, Honda Motor Co. Ltd. reported a 27.1 percent decline for the month with total sales of 83,892. The Honda brand suffered a 27.4 percent drop in sales for the month while the luxury Acura brand was off pace by 24.5 percent.

Toyota Motor Corp. saw a 21.1 percent falloff for the month with 110,937 vehicles sold. The Toyota brand dropped 18.7 percent; Lexus division sales fell 37.8 percent compared with a year ago, when Japanese production was at full throttle.

“June marked a significant turning point for Toyota as sales moved up over last month (May),” said Don Esmond, head of U.S. operations. Supply and selection are improving daily, he said.

Nissan & Infiniti bringing their new sheetmetal to the 2012 NAIAS

From AutoGuide.com:

Nissan left the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) two years ago to focus on larger debuts in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York City. But for 2012, Nissan will be present for both press conference days, on a stage in front of 5,000 journalists from 41 states and 60 countries (who attended 2011′s press days). But unlike 2011, blogs around the world won’t post their horror stories of covering a single 16-hour day of press previews: major manufacturers like Nissan, Ford, GM and Chrysler have supported the two-day press conference schedule. No more passed-out journalists or media room fighting.

“We’re thankful that NAIAS is, once again, an important part of Nissan’s international auto show strategy,” said NAIAS chairman Bill Perkins. ”NAIAS remains one of the most important motor events in the world, and our manufacturer partners know that we do everything possible to create an exciting, supportive venue.”

2012 NAIAS getting it’s groove back

Good News Here! We covered the NAIAS last year for the reveal of the 2011 Chrysler 300 and Cobo Hall was packed. It appears the folks in Detroit want a bigger and better auto show in 2012 with more floor space and more vehicles!

From the Detroit Free Press:

The 2012 North American International Auto Show will have more exhibit space and more vehicle introductions than this year’s show, which drew 735,370 people to Cobo Center in Detroit.

The show will also add a second full day of press conferences and vehicle unveilings, a change that should keep a few thousand business travelers patronizing local hotels and restaurants longer.

Cobo’s exhibit space will grow 25,000 square feet to 725,000 square feet for the 2012 show, Cobo Center general manager Thom Connors said today. Work to expand further by replacing Cobo Arena with exhibition space and a new ballroom begins in July and will be done by 2013.

Ford, General Motors and Chrysler have all promised new-product news both on Monday, Jan. 9, and Tuesday, Jan. 10, show chairman Bill Perkins said. About 5,000 journalists from across the United States and 60 other countries attended the show this year. The 2011 NAIAS had just one day of press conferences, limiting the amount of media coverage automakers received.
