MotorTrend: The Cars We’re Looking Forward to Driving

MotorTrend takes what they saw in Geneva and breaks down the cars they look forward to driving. We’d like to get our hands on a few of these gems as well.

PORSCHE 918 SPYDER
Porsche’s hybrid supercar concept is the star of the show, and the good news is that while it’s a concept, it’s anything but vaporware. The 918 Spyder’s technical specification reads like a science experiment and its claimed performance like science fiction. But as Mike Connor reports, Porsche is apparently considering building a strictly limited run of production versions — maybe 750 to 1250 in total — using a similar business model as the Carerra GT’s. Significantly, Porsche CEO Michael Macht made a point of saying the company has only ever shown one concept car that never made it into production. So consider our hand up for the first drive. Hundreds of GM dealers could get their stores back

Something just didn’t feel right about the way GM and Chrysler planned to shut down their dealers and now we might be witnessing a huge reversal. Stay tuned!

From the Detroit Free Press:

General Motors said today that it is sending letters to 661 dealers that lost their franchises through a dealership consolidation program, which will give them an opportunity to apply for reinstatement.

To qualify, the dealers would need to meet a number of financial requirements, such as having adequate capital to operate and available financing.

“This has been a very, very tough time as the company has emerged from bankruptcy,” said Mark Reuss, GM’s North America president. “It is emotional and it is part of the rebirth as we start the company from a clean slate.”

Porsche 918 Spyder a head turner

The Porsche 918 Spyder concept stole the show at Geneva. This is the car people could only dream of owning until now!

Introduced on Tuesday: Porsche 918 Spyder concept

What is it? A plug-in hybrid that Porsche says is capable of lapping the “Nordschleife of Nürburgring in less than 7:30 minutes, faster than even the Porsche Carrera GT.” What’s more, Porsche says fuel economy should be somewhere around 78 miles per gallon. How does it do it? The 918 Spyder concept is powered by a 500-horsepower gasoline V-8 and electric motors on the front and rear axle (the two electric motors make a combined 160 kilowatts of power, or the equivalent of 218 horsepower). Total power output is 718 horsepower. Porsche is not saying whether the 918 Spyder concept will go into production, but don’t bet against it. The technology is just too promising, the styling too delectable.

Aston Martin DBS UB-2010 Limited Edition

Holy Toledo! This DBS UB-2010 edition Aston Martin is off the charts all by itself at the Geneva auto show. The paint job on the model shown below is as good as it gets.

Aston Martin introduced a new limited edition run of 40 cars celebrating Chief Executive Ulrich Bez’s tenth anniversary heading the luxury car manufacturer.

The DBS UB-2010 edition includes a run of 20 Coupes and 20 Volantes, each personally specified by Bez with a new Azurite Black paint finish with metallic bronze leather with woven seat inserts and Cryptic Titan facia finish. Each limited edition model features a UB-2010 sill plaque signed by Bez.

GM’s Bob Lutz to retire in May

Longtime auto executive Bob Lutz is going to hang’em up on May 1st. Of course Mr. Lutz 78 had a great line to describe how he feels at this time.

There is something that gets old about getting up at 4:30 in the morning,” Lutz said today in Switzerland after the Geneva auto show. “At some point you have to do something new.”

DETROIT — Bob Lutz, the General Motors Co. product development leader who postponed retirement last year to help steer the automaker out of bankruptcy, plans to call it quits May 1.

Lutz, 78, has been a vice chairman and senior adviser to CEO Ed Whitacre since December, after a plan for Lutz to lead GM’s revival through marketing unraveled within six months.
