2012 Cadillac SRX Car Review

I was looking forward to testing the 2012 Cadillac SRX AWD Premium Collection model for many different reasons. One reason was that I have seen these Cadillac Luxury Crossovers on the road and I liked the styling but had never driven one before. Another reason is that I wondered whether this Cadillac handled as good as it looks, so my curiosity was peaking. After a week behind the wheel, I have some strong feelings about this offering from Cadillac and I suppose there are thousands out there who share my observations.

Exterior
The 2012 Cadillac SRX AWD Premium Collection has plenty of bling and sleek styling for a combination that flows well together. Some of the SRX’s exterior features include a multi-piece shield grille, Cadillac’s huge iconic vertical headlamps with light pipe technology, and available adaptive forward lighting technology that turns the lamps in the direction of the front wheels. The wide stance of the SRX with minimal overhangs coupled with the wheels pushed to the corners equates to a chiseled look similar to the exterior of the SRX crossover. Our black ice metallic test model boasted 20 inch premium bright aluminum painted wheels, which are standard on the Premium Collection SRXs. From just about every angle one can see that this is a Cadillac and a good looking Cadillac at that!

First Drive: 2012 Hyundai Veloster

Hyundai has been on a roll with its new models as we’ve noted in our recent reviews. With its emphasis on aggressive and unique styling, leading gas mileage and overall value, Hyundai is being rewarded with steadily increasing sales. The Veloster coupe is no exception as we discovered when we drove this newly introduced model last week in Michigan.

Exterior
The styling of the new Veloster is truly impressive. As you can see from the photos, Hyundai is going for a new generation of buyers with Veloster. The front end is very assertive with the wraparound headlights and prominent lower grille. LED headlight accents also come standard. The rear view is equally aggressive, and I liked the centered placement of the rear exhaust pipes. Veloster comes with 17-inch alloy wheels standard and optional 18-inch wheels with painted inserts that match the color of the vehicle. Consumers can also personalize body graphics when ordering their Veloster which should appeal to younger buyers.

The hidden third door stands out however as my favorite styling feature. The door is located on the passenger side and the door handle is hidden in the top left corner in the black trim area when you stand facing that side of the vehicle. With this convenience the coupe is much more functional as back seat passengers can avoid crawling in and out of the vehicle. The executives at Hyundai were non-committal when asked by reporters about the possibility of adding a fourth door on the driver’s side, but that’s hardly necessary.

Acura NSX Successor Taking Shape

At Honda’s recent shareholders’ meeting in Tokyo, a middle-aged man stood up during the Q&A session and asked whether the company was going to reinterpret a small, sporty car like the Beat for the 21st century. “While I am still young enough to enjoy sports driving, I’d like to drive something compact and sporty, something like an updated Beat. What are the chances of that?” he said poignantly.

Honda CEO Takanobu Ito took the microphone and replied without hesitation. “We are currently developing a successor to the Beat, a car that anyone can easily have fun with. Expect to see it in showrooms within the next few years.” The comment dominated the headlines the next day. Strangely, Ito’s subsequent utterance didn’t get nearly as much play, but potentially was much more significant to those pining away for a road-going Honda supercar: “In addition to the Beat successor, we are also making significant progress with plans for an exotic sports car.”

Just six months ago, Ito told a media gathering that Honda felt compelled to re-launch a high-performance sports car like the NSX, but he didn’t go so far as to say it was definitely happening. But it was the first time Ito had actually uttered the telling phrase “making significant progress with plans to…” build a successor.

The 2012 Ford Focus is all-new and worth the wait. The bar keeps getting higher for vehicles in all auto segments but the small car category has seen vast improvements in performance, design and fuel efficiency. The Focus needed to be a great car to really compete in today’s market.

Exterior
With all of the hype before Ford launched the all new 2012 Ford Focus, we felt this car had to look great if customers were going to pay attention. Ford took what they call their very own “kinetic design” and delivered a sleek and sculpted Focus. Our test model came equipped with Kona blue metallic paint, 17-inch alloy polished wheels, halogen headlamps, fog lamps, rear spoiler and bright beltline molding. The hatchback design was strategically brought to North America from Ford’s European studios. With sales of the 2012 Focus Hatchback flying off the charts it’s obvious that the decision to build and sell the Focus hatchback in the United States was the right call. The front end of the 2012 Ford Focus has huge radiator ducts, a sculpted hood, sloped windshield and a distinguishing grille, all of which make the car stand out on the road.
