MotorTrend: The Cars We’re Looking Forward to Driving

MotorTrend takes what they saw in Geneva and breaks down the cars they look forward to driving. We’d like to get our hands on a few of these gems as well.

PORSCHE 918 SPYDER
Porsche’s hybrid supercar concept is the star of the show, and the good news is that while it’s a concept, it’s anything but vaporware. The 918 Spyder’s technical specification reads like a science experiment and its claimed performance like science fiction. But as Mike Connor reports, Porsche is apparently considering building a strictly limited run of production versions — maybe 750 to 1250 in total — using a similar business model as the Carerra GT’s. Significantly, Porsche CEO Michael Macht made a point of saying the company has only ever shown one concept car that never made it into production. So consider our hand up for the first drive. Best Supercars of the Decade

Ari Cox of Bullz-Eye.com ranked the top 10 best supercars of the decade. Check out which car was ranked No. 1.

Last decade witnessed one of the greatest evolutionary steps in automotive history: technology and market dynamics created the perfect storm for the birth of the hypercar. There have always been companies and individuals who pushed the boundaries of what’s possible, but the horsepower and high-performance craze somehow became fully embraced by the auto industry in the 2000s. And as vehicles at the upper end of the spectrum began reaching vertigo-inducing acceleration and speed, it forced the mid-tier sports cars to step up their game as well. Cars like the Bugatti Veyron, whose price and performance specs made it a highly unlikely production vehicle in the 90s, has become just one of many in a new breed of uber-expensive rocket ships. Let’s take a look at the supercars whose tire-vaporizing performance has truly changed the game in last decade.

Porsche 918 Spyder a head turner

The Porsche 918 Spyder concept stole the show at Geneva. This is the car people could only dream of owning until now!

Introduced on Tuesday: Porsche 918 Spyder concept

What is it? A plug-in hybrid that Porsche says is capable of lapping the “Nordschleife of Nürburgring in less than 7:30 minutes, faster than even the Porsche Carrera GT.” What’s more, Porsche says fuel economy should be somewhere around 78 miles per gallon. How does it do it? The 918 Spyder concept is powered by a 500-horsepower gasoline V-8 and electric motors on the front and rear axle (the two electric motors make a combined 160 kilowatts of power, or the equivalent of 218 horsepower). Total power output is 718 horsepower. Porsche is not saying whether the 918 Spyder concept will go into production, but don’t bet against it. The technology is just too promising, the styling too delectable.

2011 Infiniti M Review

The BachelorGuy.com flew out to San Diego to test the new 2011 Infiniti M class performance luxury sedan. We are very happy to report that our friend at TheBachlorGuy.com did no damage to the beautiful track at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista and truly enjoyed the experience. Check out his review with some great pics of this beast of a sedan!

This past weekend, I flew out to San Diego to test drive the new 2011 Infiniti M class performance luxury sedan. (And drink and party, with old friends, and some new ones… but not during the drive.)

While the starting price of $46,250 for the M37 and $57,550 for the M56, may be a little out of reach for some guys, those of you that can pony up that kind of coin will be well rewarded. The new M sports an upgraded look, a cabin-full of new toys, and serious performance improvements that put the M in Mmmm. (Yeah, I know. That was weak. But it’s all I could think of in my jet lagged state…)

It won’t be on dealer floors until spring… so you’ve got time to save up… but here’s what that $50-$60K gets you: (And there’s more pics after the break.)

Hyundai i-Flow a Future Vision for the Sonata

The Big H is already on a roll but if they build anything similar to this prototype i-Flow/Sonata being shown in Geneva look out because they could be steamrollin’. Some of Hyundai’s cars already resemble a Lexus and at a portion of the cost so they have sent out warning shots to the competition on what lies ahead.

Hyundai unveiled its i-Flow concept vehicle, calling it a preview for a future D-Segment contender. According to Hyundai, we may see the i-Flow’s styling and technology in a 2011 production model. Would it be too much to expect it in the 2011 Euro-spec Sonata?

The seventh of a series of concepts from the Russelsheim design studio, the i-Flow extends upon Hyundai’s “fluidic sculpture” philosophy. The outside offers a futuristic look while inside, the i-Flow has an alien, Hyundai calls it “bionic”, feel.

Under the futuristic shell, the i-Flow is Hyundai’s first diesel hybrid powertrain. At the i-Flow’s heart is the U2 1.7L two-stage turbo engine combined with a lithium-ion powered motor. No horsepower or torque figures were provided, but Hyundai says the i-Flow gets 78.4 mpg.
