Heisman Trophy Winners Move Into Nissan’s Heisman House

As the presenting sponsor for the Heisman Trophy, Nissan is bringing college football fans new ways to get involved with the Heisman experience on TV, online, and live at 10 of the season’s marquee matchups!

On TV: Fans will get to see what happens when you gather 11 Heisman Trophy winners under one roof in Nissan’s new 45-second “Heisman House” episodes which will air immediately before ESPN’s Saturday Night Football on ABC each week of the season. The spots feature a once-in-a-lifetime lineup of college football legends, ranging from Barry Sanders, Marcus Allen, and Doug Flutie, to newer faces like Mark Ingram and Troy Smith. You can watch the first episode, which debuted last Saturday.

Online: Nissan is giving fans the chance to make their voices heard by turning its one official ballot over to the public. Fans may vote on ESPN.com or via the Heisman app on Nissan’s Facebook page. In addition to helping determine this year’s Heisman Trophy winner, fans who vote will also be entered to win a grand prize trip to attend the trophy presentation and activities live in New York on December 10.

The Sports Illustrated Heisman Tour Presented By Nissan kicked off its fifth year last Saturday at Cowboys Stadium, before LSU bested Oregon in ESPN’s Game of the Week. At each of the remaining nine tour stops, fans will have the opportunity to meet college football legends and former Heisman Trophy winners, get their picture taken on the cover of Sports Illustrated with the Heisman Trophy, pick up a free copy of Sports Illustrated’s special edition College Football’s Unforgettable Games, and take a closer look at the 2012 Nissan Maxima and Nissan Frontier.

2011 Car Review: Hyundai Equus Signature

The 2011 Hyundai Equus Signature is large and luxurious with the confidence necessary to compete in the full size sedan luxury market. We spent a week behind the wheel of this gorgeous automobile and came away with the following impressions.

Exterior
The 2011 Hyundai Equus Signature sparkled in the sun with its Black Noir pearl finish. The chrome accents and stealth design provoke a “what is that car” reaction everywhere. This flagship had to make the statement that the Equus can compete with the big boys. There is no doubt that the exterior design is on the mark. Our model sported 19-inch chrome alloy wheels with P245/45R19 and P275/40R19 tires, HID Xenon headlights with auto leveling, auto cornering, power folding heated auto and dimming mirrors with turn indicators. There is a smooth flow to the sheet metal with the front grille sporting the striking logo. Heading to the rear, the Equus takes cues from her rivals but still holds on to her own identity. This car is long at 203 inches but the design team did well by keeping the look of the 2011 Equus just as refined as it is luxurious.

Interior
The sheer size of the cabin on the 2011 Hyundai Equus Signature grabbed our attention immediately. Our media test model came equipped with cashmere premium leather seating surfaces and an exquisite micro suede headliner. Together these surfaces set the tone for an upscale feel that you normally find in much more expensive models. The Equus Signature was loaded with amenities like 9 airbags, lane departure warning system, smart cruise control with proximity key entry with push button start, power-tilt and slide glass sunroof, front and rear parking assistance system with rearview camera, 12-way power driver seat with lumbar/ 10 way passenger seat. The incredible driver’s seat had a massage system, was heated and cooled and sat in front of a heated heated wood rimmed leather wrapped steering wheel.

Fast and Furious Koenigsegg Agera R Sets New 0-200 MPH World Record

The Jet race seems to be over. There are no passenger planes as fast as the Concorde anymore, and there are no military jets as fast as the SR-71 Blackbird anymore either.

Thankfully, on tarmac, the speed race is still on. Ever since the Ferrari F40 broke past the 200-mph barrier for a production car, supercars have been getting faster and quicker. The current king in the top speed game is the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, which has hit 268-mph.

But Swedish supercar maker Koenigsegg has other goals on its mind, like acceleration and deceleration figures. In pursuit of that, Koenigsegg took its latest car, the Agera R for some acceleration runs.

The results (which are yet to be confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records) are quite astonishing. The Agera R went from 0-186 mph (0-300 km/h) in just 14.53 seconds and then came to a complete stop just 6.66 seconds later (a devilishly good time don’t you think). In comparison, the Veyron SS takes 16.7 seconds to hit 186 mph from a standing start.

Ford riding the new popularity of hatchbacks!

Here’s some news on smaller cars from From the Detroit Bureau:

Hatchbacks are hot at Ford Motor Co. and the maker’s new Evos Concept – which officially debuts at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week – suggests that even more 3- and 5-door models are in the works, according to the maker’s head of global product planning.

Long considered unacceptable to U.S. motorists, hatchbacks are gaining ground fast with younger buyers and influencing even older motorists to take another look. That convinced Ford to go with a 5-door design for the Evos Concept which introduces a new look that “will become increasingly familiar” to the company’s customers around the world,” said product czar Derrick Kuzak.

“The (hatchback) body style is becoming increasingly popular worldwide and especially in North America,” Kuzak told TheDetroitBureau.com, in sharp contrast with years past.

Where hatchbacks were offered on past-generation Ford products sold in the U.S., said the product chief, they accounted for perhaps 20% of total sales. Now, Kuzak noted, “It’s just the opposite,” hatchbacks generating 60 to 70% of demand for models like the 2012 Ford Focus and 2011 Ford Fiesta.

Lutz Comes Back to The General

Here’s more evidence from From the Detroit News that Detroit is serious about the car guys.

General Motors said Friday its former head of product development, 79-year-old Bob Lutz, is on the company roster as a part-time special adviser. He had been informally advising GM executives since his retirement in 2010.

“I’ll basically be doing formally what I did informally for the past 16 months — general observation and advice to senior management … whoever wants the view of a highly experienced outsider as an aid in arriving at what, in all cases, will be their judgment,” said Lutz, a former GM chairman and legendary figure in the industry.

His return comes at a critical time for GM as the Detroit automaker tries to sustain momentum built on vehicles such as the Chevrolet Volt and Buick Regal — cars developed under Lutz’s watch.

“The company is in great shape and is being extraordinarily well-led. I’ve seen the ‘post-Lutz’ products, and they’re great. But they value my opinion, and, as you know, I enjoy offering it,” Lutz said.

Analysts like Jeremy Anwyl, CEO of the automotive website Edmunds.com, praised the move.

“This is a good thing for GM. Even with his depth of experience, Bob can always be counted on as a source offresh ideas,” Anwyl said.
