Toyota records subpoenaed by U.S. House committee

Things could get real ugly here!

From AutoNews.com:

WASHINGTON — A House panel today subpoenaed confidential internal documents that a former Toyota Motor Corp. lawyer has said show that the automaker destroyed legal evidence about SUV rollover accidents.

The House Oversight Committee issued the subpoena as part of its investigation into Toyota’s problems with unintended acceleration. It has scheduled a Feb. 24 hearing at which Toyota President Akio Toyoda agreed today to testify.

The subpoena was issued to former Toyota lawyer Dimitrios Biller, who worked at Toyota’s North American headquarters in Torrance, Calif., managing rollover cases from 2003 to 2007.

Tracer new small car from Mercury

Mercury stays alive! It is now official that Mercury will get a rebadged Focus for the 2011 model year called the Tracer. This is a badly needed product for the Mercury brand as there is now more Sable and the fleet is thin. Lincoln Mercury dealers really needed a high volume and entry level seller to get folks in the door and the new Focus based Mercury Tracer can’t come soon enough.

From AutoNews.com:

Ford Motor Co. executives confirmed that Mercury will get a new car on the same platform as the Ford Focus.

Ford executives told dealers Sunday at the make meeting that the small Mercury is coming in 2011, the same year the Focus arrives. Two dealers who attended the meeting say the car will be called the Mercury Tracer.

“Here in the United States, the trend toward fuel-efficient vehicles is very important, and the trend toward small cars is coming back,” Mark Fields, Ford’s president of the Americas, said after the meeting. “Our strategy is pretty simple: have a broad-based lineup.”

With all the talk about the lack of product for Chrysler and Dodge, the Detroit Free Press takes a harder look and some feel there is a lot more in the works than most give credit. We all know Chrysler won’t reap the benefits of its alliance with Fiat until 2012, but that doesn’t mean the cupboard is bare. To the contrary.

This year, Chrysler plans to introduce three new vehicles that are acknowledged leaders in their segments and one new model that gets it into a growing and potentially lucrative new market.

The first Fiat model, the 500, will also arrive, giving Chrysler dealers a sophisticated and chic little car that’s smaller and considerably less expensive than the Mini Cooper.
