New Ford Evos Concept

This is the new Ford Evos concept that they will be debuting at Frankfurt soon. It is powered by a hybrid powertrain and has four seats. Now that the boring details are out of the way, lets talk about the Evos’ real party piece: its looks.

Good God it is beautiful. A natural progression from their “kinetic” design language, this new look smashes the cliches that have abounded recent car design. For instance, the headlights are slim and svelte (not bulging monstrosities that look better on cartoons than cars), the grill is not obscene in size, and there are curves in the place of slashes and edges. Luckily, we don’t have to wait long to see its influence. The first model to receive these styling clues will be revealed in four months.

But seriously Ford, if you want to win hearts, shrink the car up, keep it rear wheel drive, and give it an Ecoboost four cylinder. Mustang who?

Maserati to Launch SUV

Yet another Frankfurt Auto Show debut has come to light, this time from Maserati. To increase sales volume, Maserati is looking to increase their offerings within the next few years. The first model is the new, unnamed Maserati SUV.

Jealous of Porsche’s success with the Cayenne, Maserati is going deep into Fiat’s toy chest to create their own competitor. The result will be the equivalent of a rich man’s turducken. Expect this new model to use the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s platform, a Ferrari derived V8 (most likely similar to the Granturismo), a ZF 8 speed transmission, and the appropriate Maserati styling adjustments both inside the car and out.

If you are connecting the dots, this means that Maserati will produce a truck with a platform engineered by Jeep (also the Mercedes GL), powered by a Ferrari motor, using a German transmission, and built in the U.S.A.

Let’s see if Maserati can put all the parts together to make a true competitor to the Cayene and BMW X5M when the curtain falls in Frankfurt. If it goes all terribly wrong, expect something like the Chrysler TC by Maserati though.

Great Red Hope

Lotus is getting fat and greedy, Porsche makes more money selling SUVs to housewives than sports car enthusiasts, Aston Martin sells a rebadged Toyota. The world of sports cars is upside down. But there is hope, a small glimmer from the prodigal son of the automotive world: the Alfa Romeo 4C. This September, Alfa Romeo is set to disclose more details on the 4C at this year’s Frankfurt auto show. It may be a revised concept, or maybe, the production model.

This is not just big for car people, but for Alfa Romeo as well. Alfa is putting their hopes for a successful return to the U.S. on the back of a 1,800lb sports car. It also marks a return to Alfa making true sports cars.

The specifics so far point to the 4C as being a lightweight, turbocharged sports car. It will have a carbon fiber tub, RWD, and a turbocharged 4-cyl where it is supposed to be, the back of the car. It will also be priced in the reasonable $50,000-60,000 range. The 4C looks to replace the much loved, but nearly departed, Lotus Elise in the hearts and minds of people that enjoy driving cars, not status symbols. As for more specifics, we will have to wait until Frankfurt.

  

Ford Teases Frankfurt Concepts

The Frankfurt Auto Show is rapidly approaching so automakers are already trying to build buzz for their debuts. Ford is no exception. Not only are they touting their largest display to date, but also four new vehicles. Not many details are known, but one is a concept and the other three are production models. One production model is forecasted to be the Focus ST. The performance Focus is slated to debut with a 240hp eco-boosted 4 cyl, and the looks to match the performance. However, details of the Focus ST have been widely known for some time, so Ford must have something really exciting up their sleeve on the concept side.

I’m placing my bets on either a Focus coupe/Capri remake. A coupe version of the Focus is the missing link in the lineup so it is logical addition to have debut. It would probably compete with the wildly successful VW Scirocco that we don’t get here in the states.

On the other hand, the Capri is a much-loved icon in Europe, and has been long heralded to make a return. Additionally, in July, Ford debuted a Falcon concept in Australia , so a performance concept for Europe is not completely unfounded. It’s a long shot, but if they could make a RWD compact like the old Capri, for the price of a Focus, it would be heaven. All these debuts are slated to go global, so hope for the best because we will get them too. Stay tuned for September’s Frankfurt Auto Show

  

Mazda CX-5 Debut

Mazda has debuted their new CX-5 ahead of schedule. It was supposed to be at the Frankfurt Auto Show, but apparently they just couldn’t wait to take the covers off. This model is significant for two reasons. First, this is the first iteration of Mazda’s new design direction, “Kodo.” It supposedly means “soul of motion”, but Mazda has said current Mazdas.

Secondly, the CX-5 features Mazda’s SkyActiv systems. Skyactiv is the furthest Mazda believes traditional internal combustion engines can be pushed. It has direct injection, a 14:1 compression ratio, and a few other tricks. SkyActiv is not just engines though, it optimizes the entire car for fuel efficiency, including cutting weight and tuning the transmission for maximum mileage. The CX-5 is the first to receive this treatment, but these engines should be available in all Mazdas. A traditional gas engine will probably be available here in the U.S. as standard, and Europe also gets the choice of a diesel.

Mazda wipes the smile off of the CX-5’s face and gives it some serious tech. Can’t wait to see what Kodo and SkyActiv could bring to the Mazda 3 and next-gen RX-8.
