GM expects China sales to reach 3 million by 2015

GM has China on it’s mind hoping to sell 3 million vehicles per year there by 2015! These numbers are way ahead of schedule and just makes one scratch his head at the explosive growth in the Chinese market. The Volt will hit the Chinese market in 2011 with many more fuel efficient vehicles to follow. Buick is still growing there and with the overall Chinese market more than likely to stay at the top of the worlds major markets Buick is in a sweet spot that keeps getting sweeter.

SHANGHAI (Bloomberg) — General Motors Co., the largest overseas automaker in China, aims to sell three million vehicles a year there by 2015 as it adds new, more fuel-efficient models to meet demand.

GM and its local partners are “on track” to sell more than 2 million vehicles in China this year, four years ahead of schedule, the company said today in a statement. It sold 1.83 million vehicles in the nation last year. To meet demand, GM plans to introduce 25 new or updated models in China by the end of next year.

The 3-million unit target cements the importance of China, GM’s biggest market in terms of vehicle sales so far this year. The carmaker’s local sales surged 68 percent in March, outstripping U.S. deliveries for a third straight month. China overtook the United States as the world’s biggest auto market last year.
