New Cadillac ATS to Debut at the 2012 NAIAS with a 270 Horsepower 4 Cylinder

Cadillac is poised to announce the all new ATS which debuts a new 3.6-liter V6, a 2.5-liter four cylinder, and a new-generation 2.0-liter turbocharged Ecotec four that can reach 270 horsepower. That is really impressive for a 2.0 4 cylinder and I have a feeling that the 2.0T is going to be a popular choice with Cadillac customers.

While a relaxed, naturally aspirated V6 and a fuel efficient inline-four comes as no surprise, the new 2.0 turbo caught our attention. The high-performance, direct-injection 2.0 turbo is tuned to produce 270-hp. Translating to 135-hp/liter, GM boasts that its power dense engine has greater horsepower per liter than the BMW M3, Porsche 911 GTS, or Lamborghini Aventador (although these are all lack forced induction). Most importantly, the turbo 4-cylinder ATS packs 30-hp more than the turbo 4-cylinder found in the 2012 BMW 328i.

GM powertrain officials noted that the 2.0T Ecotec found in the ATS is 95 percent brand new compared to the 2.0T found in the Buick Regal GS. The new 2.0T features direct-injection, four-valves/cylinder with continuously variable valve timing, twin-scroll turbocharger with air-to-air intercooler, forged steel crankshaft with modular balance shaft system, and a two-stage variable displacement oil pump with jet-spray piston cooling.

“This engine is the perfect match for the new ATS, which will be a refined performance luxury sedan,” said Don Butler, Cadillac vice president of Global Marketing. “The 2.0T has an exceptionally smooth and responsive power curve that will make the ATS nimble, quick and fun to drive.”

The new 2.0T highlights a broad engine lineup that will power the ATS which is slated to begin production next summer. Cadillac will also offer a normally aspirated 2.5L four cylinder engine and a 3.6L V-6 engine in the ATS.

The 2.0T builds on the advanced-technology heritage of previous GM turbo engines with features that enhance efficiency, durability and refinement.

  

Nissan & Infiniti bringing their new sheetmetal to the 2012 NAIAS

Nissan left the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) two years ago to focus on larger debuts in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York City. But for 2012, Nissan will be present for both press conference days, on a stage in front of 5,000 journalists from 41 states and 60 countries (who attended 2011′s press days). But unlike 2011, blogs around the world won’t post their horror stories of covering a single 16-hour day of press previews: major manufacturers like Nissan, Ford, GM and Chrysler have supported the two-day press conference schedule. No more passed-out journalists or media room fighting.

“We’re thankful that NAIAS is, once again, an important part of Nissan’s international auto show strategy,” said NAIAS chairman Bill Perkins. ”NAIAS remains one of the most important motor events in the world, and our manufacturer partners know that we do everything possible to create an exciting, supportive venue.”

2012 NAIAS getting it’s groove back

Good News Here! We covered the NAIAS last year for the reveal of the 2011 Chrysler 300 and Cobo Hall was packed. It appears the folks in Detroit want a bigger and better auto show in 2012 with more floor space and more vehicles!

The 2012 North American International Auto Show will have more exhibit space and more vehicle introductions than this year’s show, which drew 735,370 people to Cobo Center in Detroit.

The show will also add a second full day of press conferences and vehicle unveilings, a change that should keep a few thousand business travelers patronizing local hotels and restaurants longer.

Cobo’s exhibit space will grow 25,000 square feet to 725,000 square feet for the 2012 show, Cobo Center general manager Thom Connors said today. Work to expand further by replacing Cobo Arena with exhibition space and a new ballroom begins in July and will be done by 2013.

Ford, General Motors and Chrysler have all promised new-product news both on Monday, Jan. 9, and Tuesday, Jan. 10, show chairman Bill Perkins said. About 5,000 journalists from across the United States and 60 other countries attended the show this year. The 2011 NAIAS had just one day of press conferences, limiting the amount of media coverage automakers received.
